Tennis Rules and Scoring System

Tennis is a popular sport played using rackets and balls. Players face each other in a specific area called the court and try to score points by hitting the ball into the net and the opponent’s area.

Tennis can be played both as a competitive sport in professional leagues and as a hobby for recreational purposes. Tennis, played in both singles and doubles, attracts great interest from both men and women.

Tennis is a dynamic sport that provides many physical and mental benefits. It helps players develop a range of skills such as speed, endurance, coordination, and flexibility while playing.

It also improves tactical intelligence and the ability to use strategy. Tennis also provides an environment for social interaction and strengthens personal relationships by playing among friends or in communities.

Professional tennis has a large worldwide audience through major events such as Grand Slam tournaments.

These tournaments are prestigious organizations where the most talented and famous players of tennis come together and compete.

Additionally, tennis facilities are available in many countries and increase the accessibility of the sport by offering a variety of options, such as taking individual or group lessons.

For these reasons, tennis is considered a popular and exciting activity for both athletes and spectators around the world.

What are the Rules of Tennis?

  • Court : Tennis can be played on many surfaces, but usually takes place on grass, clay or hard-surface courts. It consists of a standard tennis court, two playing areas, a net and four service areas.
  • Opponents : In tennis, two or four players face each other. In two-player games, each player tries to send the ball to the other side in the opponent’s field. In four-player games, both teams send the ball to the other side.
  • Service : The game starts with the service. The serving player throws the ball from a certain height and sends it across. The server must deliver the ball between the lines in his own area and into the net. If the ball gets stuck outside the server’s area or in the net, he makes a mistake and gets a second service. If a similar mistake is made on the second serve, a point is awarded to the opposing player.
  • Game : The game starts when the server sends the ball across. During the game, opponents try to land the ball on the court. If the ball goes out of court or is kicked incorrectly, the point is awarded to the opponent.
  • Scoring : The scoring system is different in tennis. Players score points as “15”, “30”, “40” and “game”. If both players reach the number “40”, this is called a “deuce”. In the case of Deuce, a player must then score two points. If he gets the second point to get the “advantage”, the player wins the game. If the opponent also gets the “advantage”, the game continues.
  • Set and match: A tennis match is usually played over three sets. A set is completed when players take games by winning designated points or by winning an extra game called a tie-break. The player who wins all three sets wins the match.

What is the Scoring System in Tennis?

  1. Players score points as “15”, “30”, “40” and “game”. Each time a player wins a point, they fill in the space between the points. For example, “15-0”, “30-15”, “40-30” etc.
  2. If both players reach the number “40”, this is called a “deuce”. In the case of Deuce, a player must then score two points. If a player scores two points, that player gets “advantage.” If the opponent also takes the “advantage”, the situation becomes “deuce” again.
  3. If he gets the second point to get the “advantage”, the player wins the game. If the opponent also gets the “advantage”, the game continues.
  4. A set is completed by winning a certain number of games. A standard set is usually played over 6 games. However, if there is a tie in the sets, the game continues until there is a certain point difference or an extra game called tie-break is played.
  5. A tennis match is usually played over three sets. The player who wins all three sets wins the match. Professional tennis matches sometimes include five-set matches, but this is less common.
